Abstract
cable-stayed bridges are one of the most important infrastructures in transportation lines. There are different approaches to model these megastructures based on the finite element method. Single Central Spine and complete deck modeling are two most common methods for bridge deck modeling in cable-stayed bridges. It is very important to know the dynamic behavior of these megastructures because they are constructed in long spans. In this paper, the effect of different deck modeling on modal analysis has been considered. The cable-stayed bridge used for this study is the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge. The composite deck is constructed by steel beams and prestressed concrete slabs. Based on the Single Central Spine and full deck modeling, three-dimensional finite-element model of the bridge has been developed by using OpenSees and MATLAB. In the complete deck approach, the deck was modeled by shell and beam elements. In the second approach the deck is modeled as a central beam (the spine) and Lumped masses are employed to model the mass of the deck, which mass corrections have been considered on it. Then, the modal analysis was performed with and without consideration of gravity loading as initial conditions to extract the first five modes of the natural frequencies. The results show that the full deck modeling is more similar to the real dynamic behavior of the considered bridge, but it takes much more computational effort. The results also showed that considering the gravity loading as the initial condition does not have a great effect on the fundamental frequencies.
