Abstract
Ultrasonic guided waves in the industry are usually used to increase the length of the inspection. These tests are generally performed in the range of low frequencies in order to increase as much as possible the path traveled by the wave in the structure by reducing the depreciation of the waves. By reducing the frequency of the transmitted waves, in addition to reducing the number of modes produced in the structure, producing basic modes, and simplifying the interpretation of the results, the non-dispersive behavior and low damp of the wave, increase the length that can be inspected. However, the use of low frequencies to perform the test reduces the sensitivity and resolution of the evaluation. In this article, the possibility of using the circumferential of higher orders of modes cluster of guided waves (CHOMC) in the range of high frequencies for the environmental inspection of pipes with high sensitivity and resolution is investigated. Circumferential Higher Order Modes Cluster Lamb waves are a type of guided waves that have various practical features such as small dispersion in the high frequency range. In this article, The finite element method used to simulated propagation of these waves in the pipes by the commercial software ABAQUS, and by finding out the behavior of these clusters, their ability to detect defects in the pipes has been investigated. For this purpose, a pipe with a diameter of 20 cm and a thickness of 1 cm made of steel and the ambient propagation of a circumferential higher order modes cluster of guided waves in the frequency range of 2 MHz was simulated. Using this model, the mutual effect of these waves on the defects in the pipe has been investigated and researched.
